Best Greek Islands Near Athens for a Day Trip

The Saronic Gulf islands are close enough to Athens that a day trip actually works, rather than becoming a rushed box-ticking exercise. Aegina — closest, most laid-back

The nearest island to Athens, and a genuine local weekend escape rather than a purely touristy stop. The centerpiece is the Temple of Aphaia, one of the best-preserved ancient temples in Greece, set on a pine-covered hill with sea views. Hydra — no cars, no motorbikes

Hydra banned motor vehicles entirely; the only transport is on foot, by donkey, or by water taxi. That single fact shapes the whole island's atmosphere — quiet, artsy, and popular with a well-heeled crowd since the 1960s when it became an artists' retreat. Poros — green, quiet, close to the mainland
