Athens Off the Beaten Path: 8 Things Most Visitors Skip

Once you've done the Acropolis and Plaka, Athens has a genuinely deep second layer for visitors willing to walk a little further or look a little closer.

Eight worth seeking out

• Kerameikos — the ancient cemetery of Athens, right by Gazi, included on the combined archaeological ticket but visited by a fraction of the people who see the Acropolis. Genuinely peaceful, with excellent funerary sculpture and far fewer crowds. Full guide.
• Strefi Hill — a small, unpolished green space above Exarchia with a good, uncrowded view over the neighborhood rooftops.
• The First Cemetery of Athens — an atmospheric 19th-century cemetery near the Panathenaic Stadium, with elaborate neoclassical funerary sculpture, including the famous "Sleeping Beauty" monument.
• Anafiotika at dawn — the same tiny Cycladic quarter covered in our Anafiotika guide, but genuinely transformed with nobody else in the lanes — worth an early start once.
• Numismatic Museum — a small, specific coin museum housed in the former mansion of the archaeologist who excavated Troy, with a lovely café garden most visitors never discover.
• Mets neighborhood — a tiny, low-key pocket between the Panathenaic Stadium and the First Cemetery, with a handful of good local tavernas and almost no tourist presence.
• Bath House of the Winds — the last surviving Ottoman-era public bathhouse in Athens, now a small museum in the heart of Plaka, walked past by thousands who don't realize it's there.
• Filopappou Hill at sunset — quieter and less photographed than Areopagus, with an equally strong Acropolis view and a genuinely pleasant wooded walking path to reach it.
