Ermou Street & Shopping in Athens
Athens' main shopping artery runs straight from Parliament to a Byzantine church stranded in the middle of it — high-street brands with a genuine oddity built in.
Ermou Street runs dead straight for about a kilometre from Syntagma Square toward Monastiraki and is Athens' main pedestrianized shopping strip — international high-street chains, shoe shops and Greek clothing brands, busy with locals as much as visitors.

Partway down, Ermou's flow of shopfronts is interrupted by the small 11th-century Byzantine church of Kapnikarea, sitting several feet below the modern street level — a genuinely strange and photogenic collision of eras that most visitors stumble on rather than plan for.
Where to shop, by what you want
- High-street and chain shopping — Ermou Street itself, plus the surrounding grid toward Syntagma.
- Designer boutiques and small local labels — Kolonaki, especially Voukourestiou and Anagnostopoulou streets.
- Antiques, records, and flea-market finds — Monastiraki, best on Sunday mornings.
- Design-forward, independent shops — scattered through Metaxourgeio and Psiri, worth browsing rather than targeting specifically.
Practical note
Most shops close on Sunday except in the main tourist zones (parts of Plaka and Monastiraki), and many still observe a Wednesday or Saturday early afternoon closing — check before planning a shopping-focused day around a specific store.
