Budget Hotels in Athens: How to Get Good Value Without a Bad Location
The cheapest room isn't always the best-value one once you factor in taxi fares back from a bad location.
Athens has genuine budget options that don't require compromising on location — the trick is understanding which neighborhoods are cheap because they're less touristy (good) versus cheap because they're inconvenient or uncomfortable at night (worth avoiding).
Where the good-value options actually are

What to check before booking a cheap listing
- Distance to a metro station — a very cheap room 25 minutes' walk from the nearest line often costs more in taxis than it saved.
- Recent review dates, not just the score — budget properties change hands and standards more often than higher-end ones; a great score from three years ago tells you less than reviews from the last few months.
- What's actually included — air conditioning, particularly in June–September, is not universal at the budget end in Athens and is worth confirming rather than assuming.
